Paper cut family portrait

Last week, one of my friends shared on Facebook that she did a paper cut family portrait in Chinatown. It was so lovely that I decided to make one for the family too and here’s ours.

From right to left, Dad, Sophie’s name in Chinese, and Mum. And the message on the left and right are loosely translated to “Family reunion joys”.

Don’t you think it does resembles our family, especially Little Sophie?

This makes such a lovely Chinese New Year decoration and I’ll be finding a place to hang this up.

I forgot to take down the unit number of the shop. But if you’re keen to locate the shop, it’s along Temple Street in Chinatown and you can spot the shop when you see this photo frame with paper cut outs of different characters.

These characters are all pre-cut and all you have to do is select the character you like. Alexis and Sophie character had glasses on but the stall owner was so nice to trim off them off since they don’t wear glasses.

Other options with 1 character, 2 characters and even a family with two generations.

The words can be in English or Chinese and are all hand cut on the spot.

I was charged $10 per character and paid $30 for my family portrait, inclusive of the frame. According to my friend there is more than one shop that does this, so make sure you don’t get over charged. I came across a cheaper version of the paper cut off but the shi fu only paints the name below the paper cutting which I felt was not as nice.

There is so much to see at Chinatown during Chinese New Year. I hope I’ll have the time to go down again to buy some new year goodies and soak in the festive atmosphere before the Lunar New Year this weekend!

Hope you like this find 🙂

You should Adeline. I suspect this is only available during Chinese New Year.
