The man for the job

Come next Saturday, citizens all over Singapore will be casting their votes for our nation’s president after a 18 year hiatus. And we all know that it’s a battle of the 4 Tans.

Bread Talk sure cashed in on the Singapore Elections with their Tan-tarts. Very clever.

But on a more serious note, after the recent 2011 General Elections, it has made me sit up to understand the political scene in my country before I get labelled as being politically apathetic. Thanks to social media, we’re now presented with a more balanced view and also platforms where honest opinions can be voiced without fear.

But who will I vote for as the man for the job?

As a voter, I’ve done my bid by understanding the roles and duties of a president. I’ve listened to what each candidate has to say by watching their presidential’s candidate broadcast, heard about where they came from, what they stand for and their aspirations on how they will serve the citizens. I’ve been following the news about them to see how they are reaching out to fellow Singaporeans.

Sadly, some of the presidential candidates are blurring the lines between the role of the government and the role of the President with proposals which they may not have the power to implement as a state’s President.

In the week ahead, I will have to deliberate on the qualities that I want in my President. Meanwhile this is my “wish list” for Singapore’s next President.

  • I want a President who can has his own mind and views and be above politics;
  • I want a President who can carry himself well when representing Singapore to leaders all around the world;
  • I want a President who has the integrity to watch the nation’s reserves;
  • I want a President to be kind and compassionate; and most importantly
  • I want a President who has a heart for Singapore and Singaporeans and who will put Singaporeans first.

May the best man win!
