Yesterday, we caught Monsters University and it was Sophie’s first 3D movie experience. She’s actually unfamiliar with the characters from Monsters Inc as I wasn’t sure how she’ll take to monsters. Although the monsters don’t look that mean, I wasn’t going to risk giving her nightmares of monsters in the dark especially since I’m resuming the sleep training (which is not going too well by the way).
Anyway, after she saw the trailers of Monsters University on TV, she told me she was keen to watch it and so we attended the media invite yesterday and got to catch it before it’s officially out.
Sophie’s enrolled herself for Monsters University!
Sophie and one eye Mike!
Instead of a sequel, this new movie brings us back to when Mike and Sulley were freshmen at Monsters University. Mike is the model student who never misses a lecture and is a bookworm mugging day and night hoping to fulfill his dream of being a top notch “scarer” at Monsters Inc. Sulley on the other hand is a natural scarer as he comes from the Sullivan lineage, the son of a famous scarer and blessed with a physique that is larger than life accompanied by a thunderous roar.
After they get booted out of the elite Scare Program by the fearsome Dean Hardscrabble, they have to join forces and end up with a group of misfits at Oozma Kappa to compete against the other fraternities to win the Scare Games so that they can prove their worth for the Scare Program. Eventually, they develop an unexpected friendship between two characters with opposite personalities as they learn to see the good of each other’s strength.
Ultimately, the film deals with issues of insecurity and finding your dream that is played out by Mike as he struggles to reach his life long dream of being a scarer against the odds. Although Sophie wasn’t able to grasp that from the movie, she did tell me, it’s about giving your best, after I explained the movie to her. Not bad, not bad at all for a 3.5 year old.
3D movie for a almost 4 year old
As this was Sophie’s first 3D movie (her 2nd movie), I was prepared that she’ll complain about the 3D glasses. But she took them pretty okay and only started to feel uncomfortable wearing them about 3/4 into the movie. For the mean time, I think we’ll stick to regular 2D till she’s older. We watched the movie in Cathy cinema and I was surprised that we got to keep our 3D glasses which I understand to be good for 10 uses!
Overall, Monsters University is an enjoyable show that the whole family will enjoy! Monsters University opens in cinemas on 20 June 2013.

I recently saw my first 3D movie too! (I am, however, somewhat older than Sophie. Ok, a LOT older. I am 51.) The effect made me a little dizzy, but I’m glad I have finally seen a 3D. I’m pretty cheap, though, (*LOL*) and I’ll probably see the regular 2D and save the USD2.50 from now on.
I loved Monsters, Inc., so I am excited to see Monsters University. :O)
Actually I didn’t think that this movie warrants the 3D effect. So save that USD2.50 for an action movie instead. I’m waiting for Wolverine!
I can;t wait to watch this with my boys…. been a fan of monsters inc since….gasp, i was a teen! And now I am a mom! hahaha.
Yes, you just reminded me that I was only 21 when Monsters Inc was out. Hope you enjoy it. And psst, stay on after the credits 🙂
