Review: Hey Little Mousedeer

Last Saturday, Sophie and I watched the  latest production from  iTheatre’s, Hey Little Mousedeer. This was her second time watching an iTheatre’s performance her first show was Ashputtel: The Cinderella Story last year.

Before the show started, I briefly told her that the story was based on a popular folk tale where a mischievous mousedeer, Kancil, who got himself into trouble when he went round tricking his fellow friends in the jungle, the tiger, the monkey and the lizard. I also reminded her about the haze situation we had about a month back and how the topic of deforestation was brought up when the characters almost got burnt but the day was saved by a fast thinking hero. So she was curious to know the ending and was eagerly waiting to find out who was the hero that saved the day.

Sophie and her peace out sign

When we entered, Sophie was given a booster seat so that she’ll have a more comfortable view. The stage was set in a forest setting and Sophie was very excited for the show to start when the lights dimmed.

I could tell that Sophie enjoyed the performance especially the songs, when she swayed her body and started to clap her hands and hum along to the tunes. Although the cast for this production was rather small with just 5 main characters, I liked that the simple story was told animatedly with jokes that tickled the kids and adults alike. There was also the use of shadow puppets towards the end of the show to depict the deforestation and how the forest fire threatened the eco system and almost harmed the forest animals.

Among the the mousedeer and the lizard were Sophie’s favourite and she was really quite terrified of the tiger and refused to sit on her own for the meet and greet and photography session at the end.

But more importantly, she learnt two important lessons from the show: that we shouldn’t play tricks and tell lies to your friends otherwise no one would want to befriend you and the harm we do to our environment when we do not take care of Mother earth.

The duration of the show was about  45 minutes with a meet and greet with the cast at the end of the show. This production is recommended for those 3 and up.

The show will run till 7 August. If you’re keen to catch it, get your tickets from any SISTIC Authorised Agents islandwide. For more information on the play, you can also visit their website
