Motivational Monday – The Singapore Kindness Movement

Singa the Lion, the familiar icon for courtesy that most Singaporeans grew up with. If you’re from my generation, he should be no stranger to you and can be spotted around town if you’re observant enough.

So much has been said about the state of kindness in our society of late. Are we as a society deteriorating in the level of our graciousness that this has become a hot button issue that there’s even a National Conference on Kindness?

As parents, we have the power to influence our children, the next generation, to be a more gracious society or a ungracious one. And most of the time, our kids are picking up from us as they watch and observe us. The way we speak to our family members, the way we treat the domestic helper, the way we respond when the traffic is a pain.

So let’s set an example for them by being gracious ourselves. Simple ways that we can get them started is with their Ps and Qs. Being thankful and being thoughtful of other’s are another ways that we can show kindness and slowly, they’ll pick up what it means to be gracious and kind.

Anyone still remember the words to the courtesy campaign jingle? What are some ways that you impart kindness to your kids?

The timing of your post is so apt. I was just reflecting on how my husband and I should set an example of speaking kindly and showing kindness in our actions towards each other. It’s easy to just be too quick in the ‘overfamiliarity’ with each other and the rush to get things done. But really, the first example kids see is right at home with mummy and daddy.

Serene, it’s a reminder for me too as I’ve been very snappy at hubby lately. Even Sophie got the brunt of my scoldings which is sometimes really uncalled for. Hope to be a better role model for her.

I too agree that teaching the kids about Courtesy is very important and that they should learn how to be gracious.

This comes as a timely reminder, esp for my hubby when he is driving! Our kids are watching us and they learn from us, it is important that we are mindful of our own words and behaviour.

Haha tell me about it? I’m a terrible example when I’m behind the wheels. In fact, hubby calls me the monster behind the wheels.
