What better to spend the long National Day weekends than to check out new cafes? Feeling a little adventurous, we made plans to have brunch the L’etoile Cafe at Owen Road last weekend. It’s actually not a new cafe as it opened since 2011. And goodness knows how I could have missed it especially since it’s so near my place.
According to many online reviews, this indie cafe with Japanese and French influence seemed like a gem as the cafe is well hidden away around Little India area and serves pretty good food.
A spot right at the entrance that offers a variety of handmade knick knacks
I love these bunting and am inspired to make one for Sophie’s room
The cafe is at the intersection of Owen Road and Dorset Road and it’s easily recognisable from its pillars where it’s painted with words like Book, Wine. You can park nearby at the HDB parking or public carport along the next lane at Rangooon Road.
L’etoile Cafe’s Menu
But our experience was sadly marred as the service staff totally forgot about our orders as it took them almost an hour to serve our brunch which ended as lunch. They were hardly apologetic and even served another table with my orders leaving me hungry and fuming.
Sophie did lots of colouring while waiting for brunch which later turned to lunch
And the food? It simply pales in comparison to all the glowing reviews I’ve read and made me so put off that I can’t even bother with their homemade cakes baked by the shop’s Le Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef.
Big breakfast for S$14.90
While their menu offers a variety of value-for-money items, like the big breakfast test Alexis had was $14.90 and my bagel with cream cheese and smoke salmon was $8.90, the food was just average but the wait was the worst. And it seems like I’m not the only one complaining about them as a few friends also commented the same thing about their slow service and lackluster food.
I’ll rather take my business to Jewel Cafe that just opened up on the nest street at Rangooon Road. In fact, I promise a review on that and their signature OMG Burger soon 🙂

Thanks for this sharing. The decor looks good though but I would agree with you that bad service does put people off. 🙂
Yes and I’m surprised that many of my friends who have visited the cafe were also than impressed.
The cafe looks really pretty though! And why are all the nice little cafes all in the east side?!! I stay in the west and feels so short changed, lol!
This is more in the central. There are many in the west too. I saw a few recommendations in today’s life section.
I would love to see the inside of their strawberry shortcake. Love their handmade knick knacks corner.
It’s apparently one of their signature cakes. But after the long wait, we didn’t really feel like trying it that day. Maybe we’ll go again and buy this for take away.
