Toys your child should never play with

Hands up if your living room is invaded by toys, toys and more toys. But have you wondered just how safe are these toys?

Sophie and her Mega bloks

You’d assume that most toys brought into Singapore would have undergone stringent safety tests, until you read this article 2 days ago which reported that out of 200 toy samples, 20% were reported to be unsafe by SPRING Singapore.

According to the report, the toys that failed the test either contained excessive levels of lead and phthalate – a substance that helps make plastic flexible – or failed a physical and mechanical test, or both. Excessive levels of lead and phthalate have been identified to be harmful to children’s digestive and reproductive systems, among other things.

Sad to say, Barney here failed the test 🙁

But in my opinion, shouldn’t toys be put under the “appropriateness for children” test?

We recently bought Sophie a cooking play set. And mind you, it was no ordinary cooking play set. The stove lights up when you cook and even emits a sizzlin BBQ sound! Pretty fun stuff if you can look pass the fact that the proportion of the food to the pots and utensils can do with better scaling.

But among the food items in the playset, we found….

GASP!

Bottles of liquor! How did these even make their way into a kid’s playset?

At 2, she’s way too young to be exposed to alcohol. And I never want to have to deal with a booze indulging and wasted teenage like Ms Lindsay Lohan.

Hope I’m not too late to hide them away from her!

Do you have a list of toys that you keep away from your kids?

OMG!!! What the heck was the manufacturers thinking eh? Scary… =/ Anyway, it’s definitely a huge concern on the safety of toys especially Allysa puts everything into her mouth. She does have a party toy that’s similar to Barney sort and she likes to play with it and put it into her mouth thereafter. But sometimes, I just let things go and think it should be okay lah…once in awhile, dirty things go in and will definitely come out. =p Guilty as charged…

Yeah even my brother had a shock that these were part of her toy set.
It’s important to keep an eye on what they put inn their mouths especially those with small parts and those with coloring. But yeah I do agree that what goes in, must come out :p

About the what comes in must come out, coincidentally, I just read in a book that when they first introduced lead into petrol, there was a lot of hoo-ha about the safety or how poisonous lead was. So they [I guess sponsored by the companies selling the lead products] conducted an experiment to prove that lead was safe. This involved having volunteers breath in or actually swallow quantities of lead and then trying to detect lead within their urine and faeces. Of course, they could not detect any lead because lead is accumulated in the bones and blood, and that’s what makes it poisonous! So doesn’t mean what goes in will definitely come out!

Okay, I take back what I said. If it’s not food, it’s not going inside Sophie’s mouth!

Yes, go hide them!! Young kids should not be introduced to alcohol! Should write a letter to the company selling the toy to alert them and make sure they don’t bring in such inappropriate toys in the future!

The company that manufactured the toys is just some small company. If it was from any of the big names, I would flip.
