Taiwan Summer Fun in Cing Jing, Taiwan (Day 3)

After our farm stay at the Flying Cow Ranch, we’re off to Cing Jing to visit Cing Jing Farm, 清境农场. We had pre-booked a cab driver to drive us from Miaoli to Cing Jing  and the journey was approximately two hours.

When we arrived there, it was so cooling and misty as Cing Jing is at a high altitude of 1,750 metres above sea level. Just look at the view that greeted us when we first arrived at the minsu. The air was definitely much fresher as the view was covered by mist not like the haze we have in Singapore now.

For our accommodation in Cing Jing, we booked the Misty Villa minsu, 雲濛仙境, which was very popular with Singaporeans. I joked and told Alexis it sure is Misty here alright. The minsu owner told us that we had the room with the best view on the 3rd storey and I have to agree.

I loved the breathtaking view that welcomed us after the mist had settled later in the afternoon. The room was spacious and the bathroom was huge. The owners of the minsu were also very hospitable and friendly and gave us recommendations on where we could go to see the best that Cing Jing has to offer.

A rack to hang your clothes and a water dispenser on the right

On our first night, we had dinner at Carton King which was just a short 5 minutes walk away from our minsu. Carton King, 紙箱王, has been one of the must visits in Cing Jing as it has a unique dining concept where everything except the food in the restaurant is made of corrugated cardboard.

Paper products and merchandise such as stationary, cards and even bags and hats can be bought as souvenirs!

Not only was the restaurant decorated with cardboard sculptures, even the furniture was made of cardboard and they were surprising strong and sturdy.

Although the place looked very interesting, we were disappointed that the food was pretty average and expensive by Taiwan standards. As a start, you have to spend a minimum of NT300 per person when you dine in. I ordered the lamp chops and Alexis had the fish.

The dishes came with 4 sides a soup, rice, vegetables and a pudding. The portions for everything was small and tasted just so-so.

While we were eating, we noticed that a few tables were enjoying their hot pot so you may want to try it for yourself.

After dinner, we decided to do the touristy thing and mailed home a post card. On level 1, there is a little shop where you can pick up a postcard and stamps. What’s interesting about the tourist attractions in Taiwan is that they have their own stamps or chops. So a tip is to bring along a notebook and you can go around collecting the stamps of the places you visited.

Sophie colouring her postcard to be mailed home to Singapore!

My post card is done!

They’ve even got a mailbox for posting back home 🙂

We headed back to the minsu to rest as it’s a pretty quiet town come night time. Sophie is looking forward to see the sheeps on  Cing Jing farm and Swiss Garden the next day. More in the next post 🙂

Heading to Taiwan soon? Don’t miss the rest of our Taiwan adventures:

Hi Susan! It’s a lovely post and you guys look like you had loads of fun 🙂
We are planning a trip to Taiwan in November. I see Sophie wearing her raincoat often… Does it rain often there?

    Many thanks

    • Susan June 23, 2013 at 5:00 pm Reply

Hi Jasmine, May was the rainy season and it rained quite a bit when we were in Cing Jing and Hua Lian. But in Taipei it was all bright and sunny.
November would be great as its cooling with temperatures of about 20degrees and it would have been just after the typhoon season which ends typically in October.

    Hi Susan,
I enjoyed reading your blog and it made me decided to bring my baby boy along to taiwan in coming cny 2014.

While planning my itinerary, i have some concerns as i also read that the route to cingjing is quite winding due to the mountainous areas and as a result, some people got car-sick. And some even said risky with sharp narrow turns. Is this worse than the trip getting to genting highland? My mum was so against this saying my boy still small. (2yo). Am quite disappointed to leave cingjing out of my itinerary

    • Susan October 21, 2013 at 7:12 pm Reply

Hi Ashley, yes the ride up was winding and at some points my girl looked uncomfortable. Thankfully, our driver is very experienced so they are very familiar with the route and they drove very safely. Hmm perhaps you can prepare motion sickness medicine for the journey or maybe time it around your child’s nap time. The route to Cing Jing is also dependent on the weather. Just before our trio the roads were closed as they had rocks that fell due to heavy rain so keep your fingers crossed for good weather.

    Hi Susan,
your blog is informative, planning to go there with family May this year, would like to clarify with you regarding distance from Misty Villa minsu, 雲濛仙境 to Carton King, 紙箱王, you mentioned it’s quite near, but when i check google map it’s quite distance away, is it both in Nantou county? the one with restaurant you are referring to, is it 台湾南投县集集镇纸箱王?

    • Susan January 13, 2014 at 3:42 pm Reply

      Hi,
There may be more than Carton King restaurant in Taiwan. The one in Cingjing is just next to Small Swiss Garden. From Misty Villa, it takes no more than 5 mins. You may refer to this link for the address http://www.cartonking.com.tw/dkrest_menu.asp?ID=40

Hi, wld u recommend flying cow or Cing Jing? I’ve a 4yo n a 1 yo.. Can’t decide which one as both looks interesting!

    • Susan February 9, 2014 at 2:59 pm Reply

If you only have time for one, then I’ll recommend the Flying Cow Ranch for those with young kids. There are more farm animals for them to see, feed and also get up close too like cows, goats, horses, rabbits, ducks, etc. There are also activities around the farm that your four year old can take part and enjoy.
      Hope this helps 🙂

Hi! I am planning a trip to Taiwan in June and looking at Flying Cow Ranch. Do you think staying there for 1 day and 1 night is enough? My initial plan was to stay there for 2 nights but am afraid that there will be nothing much to do on 2nd day. I have 2 girls – 4 yo and 3 yo.

    Thanks!

    • Susan February 18, 2014 at 5:38 pm Reply

Hi Ruby, that’s what I did, one day and one night. Actually by second day there will not be much to do since most of the feeding of animals is done in the mornings. Afternoons are mainly DIY activities which are nothing fantastic.
      Hope this helps 🙂

Hi! Thanks for sharing ur wonderful experiences in Taiwan!
For the Misty Villa Minsu tt u stayed in, were there many steps tt u need to climb in order to get to ur room located on the 3rd floor? Any problems with carrying ur luggages up to the room? Thanks in advance.

    • Susan August 20, 2014 at 1:02 am Reply

Hi Dawn, sorry I missed replying you. The taxi alighted us on the third floor as it is connected to the back entrance. But the daily walk up and down the stairs from the third floor was indeed quite tiring. Don’t recall the number of steps but should be more than 50 steps.

Hi Claire, For you kids, I’ll recommend the Flying Cow Ranch as there are lots more farm animals and activities for them. Cing Jing is at a higher altitude so it will be much cooler especially in Jan. Just make sure that your kids is dressed warmly. I’ve emailed you my Taiwan itinerary with the driver’s contacts. Hope it helps in your planning 🙂
