If you’ve ever been to Parkway Parade Shopping Centre, you’ll know that they have a shop on the third level where kids can make sand art and colour with bottled paints.
Whenever we walk past that shop, we’ll try to distract Sophie and pull her in the opposite direction so that we don’t have to pay crazy prices just to keep her occupied. But last Saturday, I wasn’t in the mood to do any shopping after dinner, so I accompanied Sophie to do some colouirng while we waited for Alexis to check out his gadgets at Harvey Norman.
When the box of bottle paints got sent to our table, she reached for the brown paint and I suggested that she should use gray. And when she moved on to use black, I tried giving her my opinion that it doesn’t look nice until she looked up at me and said, “Just let me colour how I like, Mama.”
In order words, “Please shut up while I exercise my creativity here.”
Ouch!
But I think she’s right. Why can’t little miss hippo here be purple, pink or even green for that matter? And for my rainbow loving girl, colours are the way to go. And don’t just stick to conventional colours, go on and use whatever you fancy. Besides isn’t art a form of expression? I have to shut that critic in me who’s always ever so quick to pass judgment when I see her doing things differently. Maybe I should learn to see the world through her eyes to see the beauty even when it’s not something I’m used to.

It’s amazing what our children can teach us through their non-judgemental mindsets!
I am making a more conscious effort to stop – look my children in their eyes – listen to what they are telling / sharing with me – and respond to them accordingly.
Yes, I do need to slow down, get down to their level to see how they view the world. It sometimes looks a lot more colorful from their point of view.

What a precious lesson Susan! Indeed there is so many ways of seeing with art, and never a right way at that… Parenting is such a humbling journey, and there’s so much more to be discovered!
Yes it IS a humbling experience, June. Guess that’s why they always say that when we think we are teaching our kids, they are the ones who also surprise us with the lessons they are teaching us.
I don’t comment on Lil Pumpkin’s drawings.. or her “make-up” skills anymore ;p I love seeing how her imagination comes alive through her creative choices. It’s taken a while but this is something I don’t want to hamper with my narrow adult mind hahahah
