Learn to read with Mega Bloks

Children learn best when they are having fun. If it rhymes or sounds silly, it’s an added bonus. I’ve been encouraging Sophie, who’s now three and a half, to read and spell so that she can read independently as she’s an avid reader.

So when a friend posted a picture on her her son having fun forming sentences with his Mega Bloks on facebook, I thought it was such a fun idea and decided to try it at home with Sophie.

Materials needed:

  • Mega Bloks, Lego Dulpo or any block like pieces for best results
  • Sticker labels or masking tape
  • Permanent marker

What to do:

  1. Stick your sticker label or cut pieces of masking tape to fits across the side of your blocks
  2. On your labels, write verb, nouns and conjunctions and throw in adjectives too

We made up our own game by rolling a dice and got  Sophie to pick the number of blocks to form a sentence.

Here are some other ideas you can try with younger kids.

Spelling
Instead of writing words, you can write letters and get your child to connect the blocks with letters to form a word. I copied this idea from the Mega Bloks ABC Spell series.

Teaching numbers

Label your blocks with your numbers and teach your child to count. You can have numerals on one side and the numbers spelt on the other side. Or you could even have them on separate blocks and get your child to match them.

Picture matching
For kids who are more visual, you may want to print pictures on one block and get them to match the word on another block.

Looks like we’ll be digging up her Mega Bloks for more learinng fun.

What other ideas can you come up with?

You can do this with J. Maybe start him off with letters first then words.

So fun, a very good idea to let the child improve on their sentence structure. I like the “he eat snake” part 😛

Hoping to find more fun ways to let Sophie learn. They always like it when it’s silly and fun.
