The Ant and the Grasshopper is probably one of the more well known Aesop’s fable. So when we were invited to watch the performance at the Jubilee theatre in Raffles Hotel, Sophie was very excited.
While the show at 55 minutes was shorter than some of it’s other productions, it was a comfortable length for younger audiences from 3-years-old and up making it a delightful show for families.
In iTheatre’s re-creation of the famous Aesop Fable, we see the two main characters, Ms Antoinette the industrious ant who works all day to prepare for the harsh winter and Mr Criminy-Grasshopper, the non-chalent dude who only cares for play always at odds with each other.
Ms Antoinette, cannot understand how Criminy see no need to prepare for the winter and is always idling around doing silly things like singing and dancing along with the pair of buzzing busybodies, Bee One and Bee Two. And Criminy on the other hands, thinks that Ms Antoinette is too uptight and don’t know how to enjoy and appreciate the world around them.
The show had lots of humors parts like the part where Lady Coco, a ladybird. who bears a striking resemblance to Lady Gaga, with her flashy ensembles and larger than life personality appeared for some comedy moments.
And as promised, there was a twist at the end of the story where Ms Antoinette showed compassion to Criminy and invited him into her home to share the food supplies that she had painstakingly stored even though he was most undeserving of it. And in return, he taught her how to slow down and appreciate the arts.
But the most important lesson that Sophie took from the show is how there is a time for everything. A time to play, a time to work and how to balance the two because they are both important in life. A most valuable lesson that we as adults should remember too.
This show was extra meaningful for Sophie because Ms Antoinette was played by her speech and drama teacher Ms Alecia. You should have seen her beam with pride as she pointed Alecia out to me once she appeared on stage. And she reserved her loudest applause for her too 🙂
