Motivational Monday {Linky Party} – We completed our first run!

Yesterday, we joined some 15,000 participants and took part in the Jurong Lake Run. This was our first family run as a family so the theme “Running as One”  really resonated with us.

I signed up for the 6km run while Alexis very gamely signed up for the 3km walk-a-jog with Sophie as he suspected that she’ll need a ‘lift’ from him during the race. Days before the race, we’ve been drumming it into her that she cannot be carried and needs to walk to complete the race. We must have repeated ourselves too many times that she would even tell her grandma that, “On Sunday, I go running. Cannot carry me, I must run”.

She actually fared better than expected given that she was dragged out of bed at 7am and whizzed to the race while still in her PJs.

Alexis and Sophie at the start of the race

Alexis carried her for 2/3 of the race so she walked for at least a km plus a little more since we parked at IMM before walking over to Science Centre where the starting point of the race was.  At the end of the race, this little one was so tired that she told Daddy that she needed to rest by the curb.

Pardon me if I look a little unglam

As for me, I think I clocked 42 mins for my run. What kept me going was seeing how everyone pushed on with the cheers from the supporters that were strategically stationed along the race route. But more importantly, I felt proud of myself that I”m doing something which I have set out to do – to challenge myself to run a race like this.

Glowing after the race

I started off the year with a goal to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle and here I am being an ambassador for the Jurong Lake Run to be an example to other moms that we can and should find time to exercise. I will not tell you that it’s easy but it will be worth it because my family has been influenced by my change in lifestyle. And that’s what moms do best, championing a healthy cause in the family.

I know that this will not be my last race and I’m contemplating doing a half marathon in a year or two’s time. Meanwhile I’ll have to resume training for my vertical marathon in preparation for the race in November.

And here’s where I sign off with my line, ” I run for my family. How about you?”

Well done to you and your family! I hope it was a good day out all together, very impressed with Sophie’s efforts 🙂 I thought the supporters and volunteers were really great too..
It’s an awesome sign that you’re already thinking about your next races! Take your time with the half, there are so many races in Singapore and a few 10ks over the next year and maybe a 15k or two will be great preparation for a half. Gradually working your way up will also mean you can enjoy the race and you recover well too. I will see you at more races soon I hope, and all the best for the vertical marathon training!

    Well done, Susan!!

So proud of Sophie for managing to take part as well… and Daddy for giving his helping hand. That photo of her at the kerbside is just priceless!

I laughed when my hubby sent me that picture of her after the race. Too cute.

Wow well done, Susan! You are my inspiration in this. I must drag my family to a family run. Whenever I suggest this, the boys in the family just roll their eyes and head straight to their pillows or iPAD. I am sure the only supporter I have is my baby girl, who will gladly follow me everywhere. 😛

Care to join me as I attempt a 10km run then? Haha the boys don’t know what they are missing out and at least your little baby girl has you, or rather, you have her 🙂

Yes the supporters along the race route were really encouraging in keeping the spirits of the runners up. She had an enjoyable though tiring morning. She even said she will join again next year! I’ll take your advice and start with the 10 and 15 km runs before progressing to the half marathons. As for my next race, it’s scaling the Swissotel 🙂 It was great to have met you and the rest of the inspiring Heros for this run. Congrats on your superb timing 🙂

Congrats Susan on completing the race, you did it! Lots of perseverance and determination which I believe Sophie will pick up from mommy. We have joined the Standard Charterted Kids Race and the OCBC Cycling Race as a family and they’ve become precious family milestones too!

Awww I can’t wait till Sophie gets older for us to have more adventures as a family too. There’s so much to do outdoors and the kids always enjoy it when they get to run and have fun under the sun.

Awesome job, Susan! Love that family smiling pic and your last line. =) I think I only ran a 10km run twice in my entire life. Maybe next time we should all bring our girls and do the 3km one together! Sounds like a challenge but lots of fun!

P/S: Sorry I wanted to link up for Motivational Monday today but my post was quite a dismaying one after a gruelling battle with constipation over the weekend. I hope I have more inspiring things to write next Monday okie! =)

Sure, lets do it. There are so many runs that includes the ids these days like the Cold Storage Run, POSB run and there is even a kids catagory for the Stand Chart run too.
No worries, look forward to you linking up next Monday 🙂

I run to be healthy.. erm… actually, I run so that I can eat more (without gaining weight). LOL!

      Very valid reason 🙂

I love the photo of your little gal resting by the curb! This is really quite inspiring and I’m going to try and get our little family to exercise together too. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
