Motivational Mondays – Disconnect to reconnect

If there is one thing that most mums want in their lives, it’s more time in any given day. As a working mum, I often lament that I have no time especially when I have to juggle work and family from Mondays to Fridays. And come weekends, you can throw in housework, cooking, packing, washing to the equation and you get a pretty tired out mum.

But to be completely honest, I often find myself spending more time than I would like to admit on my smart phone and the internet most days. Yes, they are my little foxes in my life that are threatening to spoil the vine. It’s so easy to lose track of time just scrolling, liking, reading everything from status updates to Instagram pictures. And as bloggers, we all like receiving comment love, so I try to also spread some love by hopping over to blogs and leaving some love too.

So just when I thought that I should scale back on my blogging, the internet connection at home had some problems, so I decided to take a blogging break even though I had a couple of posts scheduled. And since Alexis was out of town for work for a few days, my mum came over to my place to help out. So last week, most evenings was spent playing and reading more bedtime stories with Sophie. And later in the night, I also chatted with mum, did some reading and caught up on my Project Life.

It felt so refreshing to sleep before midnight. Yes, I often sleep at odd hours because I stay up to surf the internet or blog after everyone is asleep which has taken a toll on my body and the pimples speak for themselves. *Bleh*

And during my digital detox time, I reflected and penned down the reasons why I started my blog and the direction of my blog forward. This much needed time to reflect has given me so much more clarity and I wonder why I didn’t do it earlier 🙂

Ultimately, we all have 24 hours in a day and it’s up to us how to make the most of it and spend it in the most meaningful way. While I enjoy the online connections , I am also reminded that my family deserve my full attention when I’m with them. So I’m embarking on a personal mission to be more intentional to disconnect and reconnect to make time for those that matters most to me, myself included 🙂

I know exactly what you mean. I sometimes even feel that the constant connectivity is making me multitask more… in turn making me pretty stressed out with the constant need to know… thanks for the reminder Susan!

Our lives have changed so much with the availability of the Internet at our fingertips but I keep asking myself how will life change if all these goes away (though I doubt it). But that’s keeps me in check 🙂

It is a joy to be connected virtually, frankly speaking. ‘Meeting’ like-minded (or not like-minded) people and learning great things… But the again, in reality we have too many roles to play, too many tasks to accomplish, and yet too little time. So, I also less virtual socializing these days. I reckon, I should act on what i learn in virtual world.

I am still struggling in balancing between disconnect and reconnect. This post comes in timely as reminder for me, Susan. Thank you!

    Love the poster btw 😉

I know what you mean Pc. I enjoy connecting with like-minded people too and it’s so nice to have people who understand you. For me I sometimes get lost just looking at my IG feed or Pinterest coz I like looking at craftihg ideas, Project Life, pretty stuffs that makes me happy. That’s why it’s not uncommon to hear little Sophie going , “Why are you still using your hp under the blanket mummy. Go to sleep!” It’s funny but true.

It’s wonderful that you managed to spend some quality time with your Mom the past week when Alexis was away…I have to admit I need to disconnect more too, to be conscious of how time spent online is consuming me — my sleep, my time with David and Dana and most importantly, time with God.

Yes, amen to all of that. That’s why we have friends to keep us accountable to each other. And yes, I need more sleep too.

Love this post, Susan. Coincidentally, I’ve also disconnected quite abit the past two weeks, in order to be more present in real life. I’ve uninstalled my Instagram and Facebook from my hand phone, as it has become too convenient for me to check statuses, look at others’ photos, and once I’m on it, it gets easy to just keep scrolling. These two weeks of being offline more has also given me time to reflect on life and what’s important, as well as rethinking my purpose in blogging. Thanks for this post. It’s so timely for me. May you continue to enjoy your offline life with your loved ones.
